Top Pismo Beach Attractions & Activities
A Day at the Beach Never Looked Better
From surfing to hiking to ATV rides, Pismo Beach is a mecca of fun on the Central Coast. This casual beach town offers a variety of Pismo Beach attractions and festivals that the whole family can enjoy - especially when you stay at The Tides Inn. Guests can take in the sights of classic California with a stroll along Pismo, Shell, Grover, or Avila Beach, where no two sunsets are the same. Play a round of golf on scenic fairways, ride the dunes in a four-wheel ATV, gallop along the coast by horseback, or fish from our 1,200-foot pier. Shoppers can also visit the Pismo Beach Premium Outlets, which offer stores like Nike, Levis, Guess, and Polo Ralph Lauren.
Our Surfer's Paradise...
Pismo Beach is known for its barrels - especially in the winter - where surfers are likely to experience a good break at the pier, with the best swell direction from the southwest. The south side of the Pismo Pier is typically better for surfing than the north, and the further south you venture from the pier, the more secluded the water tends to be. Please note, in the winter we highly recommend wetsuits for the cooler water temps.
We invite you to experience the best Pismo Beach surfing at The Tides, where the surf spots are just a 5-minute drive away from our hotel. Other nearby surfing destinations include Morro Bay, Cayucos, Moonstone Beach, and Pico Creek.
Off-Roading at Oceano Dunes
Oceano Dunes is the perfect site for a range of outdoor fun. Most popular for ATV or hummer rentals, visitors can also enjoy hiking, surfing, swimming, and dune buggy rides - as well as spotting wildlife. Red-tailed hawks, owls, and many kinds of shorebirds are just some of the fauna on display in this picturesque region. Explore over 3,000 acres at the only California State Park where vehicles may drive on the beach. The Oceano Dunes State Vehicular Recreation Area is less than 3 miles from The Tides Inn.
See Monarch Butterfly Grove
Every year, thousands of Monarch Butterflies flock to Pismo Beach, seeking a temporary home from the cold northern winters. From late October to February, these beautiful orange and black butterflies flock to the Eucalyptus trees at Pismo State Beach. Here, knowledgeable volunteers offer information and daily speaking at 11 am and 2 pm (weather permitting). The park is just 2 miles from The Tides Inn.
Hike 'N Bike at Montana de Oro State Park
Montaña de Oro means "Mountain of Gold" in Spanish, which stemmed from all of the gold color flowers in the park. Located 20 miles north from The Tides Inn, guests can explore 8,000 acres of beautiful cliffs, sandy beaches, sparkling streams, and gorgeous hills - including the 1,300+ foot Valencia Peak. Montaña de Oro offers guests great hiking, mountain biking, and equestrian trails.
