Fall is such a fun time to get out and explore San Luis Obispo County. The weather is beautiful, the vineyards are buzzing with harvest celebrations, and the local calendar is full of festivals, special events, and activities you might not find any other time of year. I love that you can go from a morning exploring Pismo Beach to an afternoon in wine country or a festive evening out with friends. If you're staying at Tides this season, I've rounded up a few events happening throughout the area that are worth checking out while you're here.
If you haven't experienced the Cambria Scarecrow Festival before, October is a great time to make the trip north. From October 1 through 31, 2026, Cambria and San Simeon fill with hundreds of handmade scarecrows, and some of the creations are surprisingly elaborate! You'll find everything from funny characters and familiar faces to imaginative displays that make you stop for a closer look. I love that you can explore at your own pace, discovering different scarecrows as you wander through town. It's completely free, and there's plenty for both kids and adults to enjoy along the way.
There's something about grape stomping that makes harvest season feel official, and Opolo Vineyards in Paso Robles knows how to celebrate. On October 16 and 17, 2026, the winery is hosting its annual Harvest Festival Dinner & Grape Stomp, complete with wine tasting, dinner, live music, and traditional Balkan folk dancing. Of course, the highlight is getting to kick off your shoes, step into a barrel, and stomp grapes the old-fashioned way! Between the vineyard views and the lively atmosphere, it's a memorable way to experience Paso Robles wine country. I'd definitely recommend reserving your spot ahead of time.
You don't have to travel far from Pismo Beach to enjoy a little wine country atmosphere. Just down the road in Arroyo Grande, Laetitia Winery is hosting an afternoon of live music, food, and wine on October 24, 2026, from noon to 4 p.m. Known for its estate and sparkling wines, Laetitia has a beautiful vineyard setting that's especially inviting on a sunny fall afternoon. Grab a glass of something you love, find a spot to enjoy the music, and take in the scenery. It's a great option if you want to add something special to your Saturday without making a full day trip out of it.
One of the events I'm especially excited about is the Pismo Beach Sand Art Festival, happening November 7 through 9, 2026. Artists turn the beach into a giant outdoor canvas, creating incredible designs in the sand using rakes, ropes, and a whole lot of creativity. It's fascinating to see how these enormous patterns come together, especially when you get a chance to view them from above. There are also hands-on activities, including sand globe making and community sand drawings. The festival is free, and since the tides eventually erase the artwork, it's an experience that really is different every time. For a great look at the finished designs, I'd aim to visit around 3 to 4 p.m.
If the idea of Thanksgiving dinner without the grocery shopping, cooking, or dishes sounds appealing, Cass Winery has you covered. On November 13, 2026, the Paso Robles winery is hosting a Friendsgiving celebration in its Barrel Room, featuring a multi-course dinner prepared by Chef Candice. Expect creative interpretations of traditional holiday favorites, thoughtfully paired with Cass wines and served around a communal table. I think there's something especially nice about sharing a meal like this during the fall, whether you're celebrating with friends or simply looking for a different kind of wine country experience.
For anyone who enjoys getting a little creative, SummerWood Winery is offering a Thanksgiving Floral Workshop on November 22, 2026, from 1 to 3 p.m. You'll learn to put together your own seasonal floral arrangement while enjoying a glass of wine alongside a cheese and charcuterie pairing. All the materials are provided, so you can focus on arranging flowers, trying something new, and enjoying the afternoon. The best part? You get to take your creation with you, whether it's headed straight for your Thanksgiving table or you're just looking to bring a little fall color indoors.
As November comes to a close, the San Luis Obispo Botanical Garden brings a whole different kind of color to the season with Nature Lights. On select evenings from November 25 through December 27, 2026, the gardens are transformed with colorful illuminated displays, creating a festive setting for an evening outdoors. Along with the lights, visitors can enjoy live music, food from local chefs, seasonal activities, and hot cocoa by the fire pits. It's a great way to kick off the holiday season, especially if you're visiting with family or looking for something festive to do after dinner.
That's what makes fall around Pismo Beach so enjoyable to me. There's always a different event to check out, a new experience to try, or a reason to venture a little farther and see what's happening in the neighboring communities. Whether your plans include wine tasting, a family outing, or something completely unexpected, there's plenty to fill your calendar this season. And with Tides just steps from the beach, you can enjoy everything happening around SLO County while still making time for a few classic Pismo Beach moments along the way.
